Brazilian Judiciary faces scrutiny over press freedom and STJ leadership changes

The Brazilian judiciary is facing scrutiny over several distinct developments. In the Supreme Federal Court (STF), a debate has intensified regarding journalistic source secrecy following a decision by Minister Alexandre de Moraes to search electronic equipment belonging to a journalist. This measure, part of an investigation into political activities in Maranhão involving Minister Flávio Dino, has drawn criticism from press entities and journalists who argue it threatens constitutional protections.

Concurrently, major Brazilian newspapers have adopted a more critical tone toward the STF, reflecting growing concerns over judicial limits and freedom of expression.

In the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), institutional changes are underway. The court is launching the construction of a new building, Bloco G, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, to house technology and information sectors. Additionally, a new leadership administration is taking office, with Minister Luís Felipe Salomão assuming the presidency. The new management aims to implement a relevance filter to manage the court's high caseload, which currently exceeds 320,000 pending processes.
