Brazilian media outlets issue editorial defending democracy

Fifty-five independent journalism outlets in Brazil have released a joint editorial defending democracy and press freedom against authoritarianism. The collective statement warns of ongoing threats to the country's democratic institutions and the right of the public to access reliable information.

The editorial highlights a significant increase in hostility toward the press during the administration of Jair Bolsonaro. According to the National Federation of Journalists (Fenaj), 1,442 cases of violence against journalists were recorded between 2019 and 2022, a rate three times higher than the average seen between 2010 and 2018. Additionally, the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji) reported 557 press freedom violations in 2022, noting that 41.6% of these incidents involved members of the Bolsonaro family.

The outlets specifically criticize the platform of presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro. They express concern over his stated priorities, which include securing the release of his father and overturning the legal judgments against him, as well as his intentions to implement constitutional changes.
