Brazilian medium-sized companies face operational maturity challenges

A study by Mid Falconi titled ‘Maturidade da Gestão Empresarial Brasileira 2026’ highlights a lack of operational maturity among medium-sized Brazilian companies. Analyzing 294 companies with annual revenues between R$ 4.8 million and R$ 300 million, the research found that only 4.1% have reached the highest level of optimized management, where operations are not dependent on specific individuals or founders. The average management maturity score dropped from 2.64 in 2024 to 2.24 in 2026, with 59.5% of surveyed businesses remaining in the two lowest levels of management.

Challenges are particularly acute for businesses with annual revenues below R$ 150 million. Complementary data from a survey by Cora and Hibou involving 1,300 entrepreneurs indicates that 69% of small and medium business owners are directly responsible for their own financial management. This often requires owners to balance product development and sales with administrative tasks such as cash flow monitoring and payment organization.
