Brazilian MPB Honored in New Biographies and Documentary Film

Several recent publications spotlight the legacy of Brazil's Música Popular Brasileira (MPB). A new collection highlights ten books covering iconic artists such as Elza Soares, Elis Regina, Vinícius de Moraes, Tom Jobim, Cartola, Clara Nunes and Raul Seixas. Notably, journalist Lígia Moreli’s biography "Elza Soares: Insurreição na Garganta" examines the singer’s work after her 2015 album *A Mulher do Fim do Mundo* and her role in confronting racism and sexism.

At the same time, the Brazilian documentary‑animation film "A Noite de Alaíde" has premiered at the MIMO Festival in Guimarães. Directed by Liliane Mutti and based on Ricardo Santhiago’s book, the film merges archival footage with animated reenactments to portray the seven‑decade career of black singer‑songwriter Alaíde Costa, who collaborated with figures like Vinícius de Moraes, João Gilberto and Tom Jobim. The project aims to revive a largely forgotten voice in Brazil’s musical history.
