Brazilian municipal chambers rule on local leadership complaints and accounts

In Guaraçaí, the Municipal Chamber rejected a 72-page complaint against Mayor Airton José Gomes in a 7-2 vote. The complaint, filed by former mayoral candidate Marco Aurélio Mion, alleged illicit enrichment and administrative irregularities regarding assets and municipal contracts. The rejection determines that the complaint will not proceed within the Chamber, though the allegations remain subject to investigation by competent authorities.

In Mairinque, the Municipal Chamber approved the 2023 financial accounts of former Mayor Antônio Alexandre Gemente with a 9-4 vote. This decision went against the prior recommendation of the São Paulo State Court of Auditors (TCESP), which had advised rejection. Supporters of the approval argued that mandatory investments in health and education were met and personnel spending limits were respected. Opponents cited financial deficits and uncertainties regarding the payment of small-value requisitions (RPVs).
