Brazilian municipal guard kills man in Araçatuba, victim's phone missing

A 55‑year‑old man, José Roberto Nunes, was shot dead by an off‑duty municipal guard, Edvaldo Calixto de Oliveira, in the centre of Araçatuba, São Paulo, Brazil. The shooting occurred on the morning of 4 August near Praça Rui Barbosa after a dispute that investigators say stemmed from a long‑running inheritance conflict. The guard fired at least two shots; Nunes received medical assistance but did not survive.

The guard was arrested at the scene. The victim’s sister reported that his mobile phone vanished from the crime scene, and police have not yet determined how or why it disappeared. The municipal security authority has opened an administrative disciplinary proceeding to examine the guard’s conduct, while the civil police continue the criminal investigation into the motive and the missing phone.
