Brazilian municipalities debate motorcycle lane regulations

In Salvador, Councilman Randerson Leal has reaffirmed his authorship of the ‘Faixa Azul’ (Blue Lane) initiative, a project that created exclusive lanes for motorcyclists. Leal addressed the City Council to defend the official records against claims by other political figures regarding the project's origin. The initiative, established via Municipal Law No. 9.841/2025, has shown significant impact on road safety; data from Transalvador indicates that accidents involving motorcyclists dropped by nearly 60% in the first 30 days of implementation on Avenida Bonocô, with no recorded fatalities in that period.

Meanwhile, in Guarulhos, Councilmen Delegado Mesquita and Daniel Santos have introduced Bill No. 204/2026. The proposal seeks to authorize motorcycles to use exclusive bus lanes during off-peak hours. If passed, the municipal transit authority would have 180 days to regulate specific times and procedures. The bill includes restrictions such as prohibiting boarding, disembarking, or stopping within these lanes, and requires motorcyclists to adhere to established speed limits and signaled intersection rules.
