Brazilian municipalities expand anti‑elder‑abuse campaigns

In the city of Colombo, Paraná, officials are intensifying actions against violence toward the elderly during the June Violeta campaign. The program includes free webinars on healthy ageing, rights and social inclusion, and features activities for seniors such as physical exercises and community workshops. Colombo reported having 166 residents aged over 100, highlighting the growing elderly population.

In Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, the Municipal Council of the Elderly will hold a public outreach event on June 12 at a local bank to mark the National Day of Combating Violence against the Elderly. Organizers aim to raise awareness of abuse prevention, provide information on reporting channels, and stress the high rates of elder violence in Brazil, which sees an average of 20 complaints per hour and a 226% increase in physical assaults over the past decade.
