Brazilian municipalities expand primary care services with new medical equipment

The municipality of Apucarana (PR) is upgrading ten Basic Health Units (UBSs) with new equipment kits worth more than R$ 2 million. Each kit includes an electric scalpel – previously available only at a specialized medical center – along with an electrocardiogram, vascular Doppler, physiotherapy ultrasound and low‑power laser. The electric scalpel will allow physicians to perform minor procedures such as cauterising warts, removing calluses and treating ingrown nails on site, reducing referrals and wait times.

In Porto Velho (RO), the newly inaugurated Regional Specialized Center for Maternal and Child Care (CREAMI) has installed a modern ultrasound machine. The device enables on‑site examinations for high‑risk pregnant women, speeding diagnosis and improving safety for mothers and babies. Local officials highlighted that the equipment allows patients to receive consultations and imaging in the same facility, strengthening integrated care.

Both projects aim to bring advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities closer to residents, enhancing the quality and efficiency of primary health services in their respective cities.
