Brazil sees surge of animal adoption events delivering new homes to rescued pets

A municipal adoption campaign in Nova Iguaçu, Brazil, held at Shopping Nova Iguaçu on 21 June, offered 30 dogs and cats for adoption. Participants over 18 must complete a questionnaire to ensure suitable homes. Since its launch in 2023, the program has placed more than 300 animals in families and also provided free rabies vaccinations.

In Cuiabá, a charity fair during the III Semana dos Juizados Especiais resulted in six animals—five dogs and one cat—being adopted from a pool of twelve. Organisers from the local courts and the NGO Anjos de Quatro Patas highlighted community engagement and donations of food and supplies.

Separate stories highlighted individual rescues: a stray dog named Tônico was saved from the streets and adopted after medical care, while a front‑leg‑less dog attracted children’s admiration in a public space, illustrating public acceptance of pets with disabilities. Another viral incident showed a dog named Vicente being returned to a shelter after a brief adoption, sparking online debate about responsible pet ownership.
