Brazilian municipalities implement disaster risk management plans

Municipalities in Brazil are advancing initiatives to manage environmental risks and disaster prevention. In Araucária, technical visits were conducted between late September and early October to implement the Municipal Risk Reduction Plan (PMRR). Teams classified 25 areas susceptible to geological and hydrological risks, including potential landslides and floods. This mapping effort, involving the municipal government, Civil Defense, and the consultancy URBTEC, covers several neighborhoods such as Campina da Barra, Capela Velha, and Centro. The project is supported by the Ministry of Cities and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

Simultaneously, the municipality of Altos held training sessions on October 8 and 9 focused on risk management and disaster prevention. The training, organized by the Secretariat of Environment and Tourism, aimed to equip professionals with methodologies for mapping vulnerable areas, monitoring weather conditions, and establishing alert protocols. The initiative emphasizes the integration of public policies across health, education, and civil defense to increase municipal resilience against climate challenges.
