Brazilian municipalities implement flood prevention and drainage projects

Municipalities in Brazil are implementing infrastructure and mapping projects to mitigate risks from flooding and landslides exacerbated by climate change.

In Nova Lima, the local government has intensified the mapping of high-risk areas and regions historically affected by floods and landslides. This initiative aims to transition from reactive crisis management to a predictive model by categorizing neighborhood vulnerability levels. The Municipal Risk Reduction Plan (PMRR) is being developed with technical support from UFMG, the Ministry of Cities, and UNOPS to better direct infrastructure and rescue efforts.

In São Gonçalo, drainage works are underway in the Neves neighborhood to combat chronic flooding. The project includes macro and micro-drainage installation, paving, and the desilting of channels that flow into the Rio Brandoas and Guanabara Bay. These interventions, which have a 30-month completion timeline, are expected to benefit over 12,000 residents by improving urban mobility and reducing flood risks in Neves and neighboring areas such as Vila Lage, Covanca, and Porto Velho.
