Brazilian municipalities implement new waste and recycling initiatives

In Ilhéus, Mayor Valderico Júnior has sanctioned Law No. 4.408, establishing the ‘Kata Treco’ municipal program. This initiative regulates the collection and disposal of bulky waste, such as furniture, appliances, and mattresses, which are not covered by standard trash collection. The program aims to prevent illegal dumping in public spaces, green areas, and beaches, while reducing environmental impacts and disease vectors.

Collected items will be sorted based on their condition. Reusable objects may be donated to charitable entities, community associations, or vulnerable families. Recyclable materials will be directed to cooperatives and licensed companies, while non-recyclable waste will undergo proper treatment. The program may operate via a neighborhood schedule or through direct citizen requests.

Meanwhile, in São Cristóvão, the Municipal Secretariat of Environment has opened registration for recyclable material collectors to work during the 41st São Cristóvão Arts Festival (Fasc), scheduled for November 20–22. Interested individuals must register by October 16. Participants will receive personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure safety and support the local circular economy.
