Brazilian municipalities' funeral aid programs face scrutiny

The municipal government of Palmas in Brazil offers a funeral assistance benefit to low‑income families, covering costs such as a funeral urn, body preparation, flower decoration and transportation within the city. Eligibility requires a household income of up to three minimum wages or per‑capita income of up to 50 % of the minimum wage, and applicants must provide identification, death certificates and proof of income.

In the city of Araras, São Paulo, a councilor reported alleged irregular payments solicited from families during municipal funerals. Families said they were asked to transfer R$ 200‑300 via PIX for materials like sand and cement, with the money allegedly going to a municipal employee’s private account. The municipal public services secretariat has denied any such charges and launched an investigation to verify the claims and recover any improperly collected funds.
