Brazilian municipalities launch new construction waste landfills and removal contracts

The municipality of Taboão da Serra in São Paulo state began a new phase of debris removal at the Usina site behind the Jardim Irapuã Ecopoint. To speed up the work, the city signed an emergency R$ 8.4 million contract with Brastec Serviços e Tecnologia Ambiental, aiming to clear the accumulated rubble within eight months. Small fire incidents caused by gases from decomposing waste have been monitored and contained by the municipal team.

In Marília, also in São Paulo, officials are completing the city’s first landfill licensed to receive construction‑industry waste. The project, developed after a request from the local dump‑truck association, is awaiting a final operating permit from the state environmental agency Cetesc. Once approved, all construction debris will be diverted to the new site, ending the use of an unofficial area near Avencas and improving environmental control and public health.

Both initiatives reflect local government efforts to formalise waste disposal, reduce illegal dumping and mitigate health and safety risks associated with unmanaged construction debris.
