Brazilian municipalities launch smoking cessation support groups

Municipal health departments in Brazil are implementing specialized support groups to assist citizens in overcoming nicotine addiction.

In João Monlevade, the Cidade Nova Basic Health Unit, through the Santa Bárbara Family Health Strategy, conducts weekly meetings at the Santa Rita Church. Led by a multidisciplinary team of doctors and nurses, the initiative focuses on providing a space for psychological support, motivation, and the exchange of experiences among participants to manage the chronic nature of tobacco dependency.

Similarly, in Castilho, the Municipal Health Secretariat has established a new group at the Integrated Health Center (CIS). The program involves pharmacists, nurses, and pulmonologists who provide professional guidance to a diverse demographic, ranging from young adults to elderly long-term smokers. The initiative aims to address the physical, psychological, and behavioral aspects of addiction to help residents achieve a smoke-free lifestyle.
