Brazilian municipalities propose new regulations for electric mobility

Municipalities in Brazil are moving to regulate the use of electric bicycles, mopeds, and other individual mobility devices to improve urban safety and align with national traffic laws.

In Ponta Porã, the City Council unanimously approved a bill to regulate the circulation of electric bicycles and mopeds. The legislation aims to supplement the Brazilian Traffic Code and National Traffic Council resolutions. The project focuses on normative and organizational guidelines, with educational campaigns and signage being subject to municipal budget availability.

In Lucas do Rio Verde, legislative efforts are underway to establish penalties for the irregular use of electric vehicles. Proposed measures include the seizure of vehicles and the potential liability of parents whose underage children violate traffic rules. Local officials noted a rise in safety risks, such as riding on sidewalks, running red lights, and operating vehicles without proper licensing or knowledge of traffic laws.
