Brazilian municipalities provide free glucose sensors for diabetes patients

Municipalities in Brazil are implementing programs to provide free glucose monitoring sensors to patients with type 1 diabetes.

In Divinópolis, a new law authorizes the free supply of glucose sensors and necessary consumables for residents diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Implementation is subject to budget availability, with the bidding process expected to begin in the first half of 2027. Access will require a medical prescription and will be regulated by the Municipal Health Secretariat (Semusa) based on technical criteria.

In Cocal do Sul, the program specifically targets children and adolescents aged 2 to 14. The continuous glucose monitoring technology allows for real-time tracking via mobile applications, reducing the need for frequent finger-prick tests and providing alerts for high or low glucose levels. Local health officials noted that the technology improves safety and quality of life for patients and their families.
