Brazilian municipalities push cable burial and wire removal projects

The city of Pinhais in the state of Paraná partnered with utility company Copel to clear fallen telephone and internet cables on Avenida Iraí. The operation, begun in June, involves Copel crews, telecom operators, the municipal public works department and the municipal guard to restore safe and organized cabling after a technical inspection.

Meanwhile, the Curitiba municipality is studying a city‑wide program to bury electricity and telecommunications cables in the central urban ring. The proposal aims to reduce visual clutter, lower the risk of accidents and service interruptions caused by storms, falling trees and theft, and to modernise the city’s infrastructure. The plan, discussed with BNDES and Copel, would reshape streetscapes and improve reliability for residents and businesses if implemented.
