Brazilian municipalities unveil disaster risk reduction plans

The municipality of São Gonçalo in Rio de Janeiro presented its Municipal Risk Reduction Plan (PMRR). The plan aims to map landslides, erosion, floods and other hazards, prioritize interventions, and involve community leaders and civil‑society groups. It is being prepared under an agreement with Brazil’s Ministry of Cities and the National Secretariat for Peripheries, with the goal of creating a scientific and socially informed framework for prevention and emergency preparedness.

In São Lourenço do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, officials launched a pilot that uses an artificial‑intelligence platform developed by the startup Hyven in partnership with the Rio Grande do Sul Public Ministry’s Climate Change Office. The tool combines flood maps, geological data and on‑site engineering assessments to identify risks in 10‑15 selected buildings and key public structures after the 2024 floods. Results will help the municipal civil‑defence agency set maintenance priorities and improve future contingency planning.
