Brazilian Navy rescues six fishermen from drifting vessel
The Brazilian Navy and Air Force have successfully rescued six fishermen from the vessel ‘S. E. Pescados’ after a six-day search and rescue operation. The fishing boat was located approximately 435 km from Camocim, Ceará.
The vessel had departed from Itarema on August 17 with a planned 30-day trip. Communication with the owner was lost on August 27. Authorities were notified of the disappearance on August 29, when the boat's last known position was roughly 150 km north of Fortaleza.
The loss of contact was caused by a propulsion system failure. Because the engine also powered the electrical generator, the crew was left without power for communication equipment. The vessel remained adrift until an aircraft from the Brazilian Air Force spotted it and alerted SALVAMAR NORDESTE, allowing the naval vessel ‘Araguari’ to reach the site and provide assistance.
