Rio de Janeiro issues sea alert as waves reach up to 2.5 m
The Brazilian Navy warned that a coastal surge (ressaca) will affect Rio de Janeiro’s shoreline from early Friday, 19 June, through early Saturday, 20 June. Wave heights are expected to reach up to 2.5 metres, prompting the municipal Center of Operations and Resilience (COR‑Rio) to advise residents and visitors to avoid the sea, refrain from swimming, fishing, or cycling along the waterfront, and stay clear of nearby mirantes.
The weather outlook calls for clear skies and no rain on Friday with temperatures rising to 29 °C, followed by a cold front on Saturday that will bring partly‑cloudy conditions, light‑to‑moderate rain in the evening and a high of 32 °C. Sunday will see continued rain and cooler temperatures, dropping to 27 °C. Authorities stress the importance of following the Civil‑Defence and Fire‑Department instructions to prevent accidents during the period of heightened sea activity.
