Brazilian Nyêrdson Ferreira's Moon Photo Chosen by NASA

Nyêrdson Ferreira, a 30‑year‑old resident of Cajazeiras in Brazil's Paraíba state, had his lunar photograph selected as NASA's "Astronomical Image of the Day." Ferreira, an avid astrophotographer who works as a purchasing supervisor and holds a biology degree from the Federal University of Campina Grande, submitted the image to a daily selection project run by NASA and the University of Michigan.

On 25 July, NASA editor Jerry Bonnell notified Ferreira while he was at work that his picture would be featured on the agency’s website the following day. Ferreira said the honor is rare for Brazilians, estimating that only about 20‑30 compatriots have ever received the distinction.

The selection highlights the global nature of NASA’s outreach program, which receives thousands of submissions from amateur astronomers worldwide and showcases one image each day.
