Brazilian municipalities roll out health mutirões offering vaccines, screenings and social services

Municipal governments in several Brazilian cities launched free‑service mutirões this week. In São Gonçalo, the Funasg fund organised a health‑focused outreach at the Joaquim Lavoura Cultural Centre, providing glucose checks, blood‑pressure measurements, STI tests and flu and Covid‑19 vaccinations. São Bernardo’s Caravana da Saúde reported over 1,400 cataract surgeries and dozens of related ophthalmic procedures at its new Clínica da Visão.

In the Tiradentes neighbourhood, a “Todos em Ação” mutirão at the Escola Municipal Professora Oliva Enciso offered health consultations, legal advice, document updates, haircuts, plant seedlings and a clothing drive. Aparecida de Goiânia’s mayor Leandro Vilela held a similar event in Vila Alzira, recognizing more than 50 community leaders and providing eye exams, ID cards and employment information.

The ESF Harmonia team in Varginha announced a rural vaccination schedule for five health units, while Manaus’ Sejusc delivered R$ 23 000 in credit and free birth certificates during a “Governo Presente” session. Porto Alegre deployed two mobile health units to serve neighborhoods with vaccines, prenatal care, HIV and hepatitis testing, and medication distribution. All initiatives aim to bring preventive care and administrative services directly to residents, reducing travel barriers and streamlining access to public programs.
