Brazilian officials probe scythe attack on dog and arrow shooting of capybara

In the district of Cachoeira do Brumado, Mariana, Minas Gerais, a dog was severely injured after a man threw a scythe at a group of stray dogs, striking the animal's leg artery. Video of the attack spread on social media, prompting the municipal government to deploy the Guard​ia Civil Municipal to locate the suspect. Mayor Juliano Duarte said the attacker will be handed over to police and affirmed a zero‑tolerance stance on animal cruelty. The dog was rescued and taken to Mariana’s animal shelter for veterinary care.

In São Paulo’s Guarapiranga Reservoir, a capybara was discovered with an arrow lodged in its body, likely the result of illegal hunting. The animal was taken to the Centro de Manejo e Conservação de Animais Silvestres but died from its injuries. Local environmental agencies announced a necropsy to determine cause of death and vowed to increase patrols, emphasizing that harming wildlife violates Brazil’s environmental law.
