Brazilian organizations urge Senate approval of Apprentice Statute
Organizations including IVEPESP, CIEE, and FEBRAEDA are urging the Brazilian Senate to advance the approval of Bill No. 6,461/2019, which establishes the Apprentice Statute (Estatuto do Aprendiz). The entities emphasize that professional apprenticeship is a vital public policy for transitioning youth from education to their first job, providing social mobility and protected professional development.
There are concerns regarding proposed amendments that could allow for the flexibilization of apprentice guarantees through collective bargaining. Advocates argue that because apprenticeship combines work with education, it should not be treated as a standard labor contract subject to such flexibility. They stress the importance of preserving the consensus reached in the Chamber of Deputies to ensure the policy continues to serve vulnerable youth.
