Brazilian parents ordered to pay R$ 100,000 after expelling gay son

A court in Santa Catarina, Brazil, has ordered a couple to pay R$ 100,000 in compensation to their son for moral damages, violence, and affective abandonment. The legal action follows an incident where the young man, Emanuel Roque, was expelled from his home at age 17 after revealing his homosexuality and his relationship with a schoolmate.

According to the lawsuit, the victim faced significant abuse, including being removed from his job at the family business and being prevented from attending school. The prosecution detailed instances of intimidation, including the father allegedly threatening the son with pliers and pointing a firearm at his head. The victim's partner also reportedly received death threats.

After being expelled, Emanuel lived in a municipal shelter for approximately one year until reaching adulthood. The Public Ministry of Santa Catarina initiated the action based on social media posts, messages, and witness testimonies. In addition to the financial penalty, the court prohibited the parents from making social media posts regarding their son. The parents deny the accusations and have the right to appeal.
