Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria warns of AI toy risks

The Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP) has issued an urgent alert regarding the use of artificial intelligence in toys and products designed for children and adolescents. The entity warns that generative AI systems, which can recognize voice and images, remember personal information, and adapt responses, pose risks of improper exposure.

Experts highlight that while these toys may use affective or empathetic language, they are not human. Connected devices may include microphones and cameras, providing access to the internet and enabling data collection. There is a significant concern that children might develop mistaken perceptions of AI as a friend or caregiver.

UNICEF has also raised concerns about ‘AI companions’—products that encourage conversational relationships. The SBP emphasizes the need for parental supervision to mitigate risks associated with these highly personalized and engaging technologies.
