Brazilian pharmaceutical sector faces rising bankruptcy and debt issues

The Brazilian pharmaceutical sector is facing significant financial instability, according to recent data and corporate filings. The distributor Navarro has filed for judicial recovery, while Profarma has approved a R$ 300 million debenture issuance to prepay existing debts and optimize its capital structure.

Data from the RGF-BIZDOC monitor indicates a broader trend of insolvency within the industry. As of June 30, 2026, the report recorded 54 pharmaceutical companies in either judicial recovery or bankruptcy. This includes 34 retail companies and 20 companies in the distribution and wholesale segments.

Key indicators of the crisis include cash flow shortages, recurring payment delays, high dependence on expensive credit, and shrinking margins. Experts note that the sector is particularly vulnerable due to its heavy reliance on working capital to maintain stocks and operations.
