Brazil consumer agency reports near‑175% price jump for picanha
The consumer protection agency Procon‑JP conducted a price survey on 16 July in 19 supermarkets and public markets in the capital. Prices for 95 meat and egg products were recorded, showing extreme variation.
The most dramatic change was in national‑cut picanha, whose price ranged from R$40.00 to R$109.99 per kilogram – a 174.98% increase. Other beef cuts also showed large swings: filé bovino com cordão varied 139.98% (R$50–R$119.99) and filé bovino sem cordão 66.65% (R$60–R$99.99). Pork bisteca rose 146.16% (R$14.99–R$36.90) and contrafilé 108.54% (R$35–R$72.99).
Chicken products were not immune: Sadia chicken fillet varied 56.37% (R$22.99–R$35.99) and chicken breast 54.77% (R$23.90–R$36.99). Egg prices also fluctuated, with a 60% spread for a 12‑unit white‑egg tray (R$7.50–R$12.00) and a 30.57% spread for a 30‑unit Avine tray (R$17.99–R$23.49). The survey highlights significant price volatility for consumers buying meat and eggs in the region.
