Rio de Janeiro police recover 100 stolen vehicles using in‑car camera system

The Rio de Janeiro Military Police reported the recovery of 100 stolen vehicles between February and the first ten days of June, aided by cameras installed in patrol vehicles. The kits include automatic license‑plate reading and facial‑recognition cameras and are linked to a 24‑hour monitoring center at the Integrated Command and Control Center (CICC).

Colonel Sylvio Guerra, secretary of the State Police, noted that the system’s efficacy rose ten‑fold in early June compared to May, with 31 recoveries in the first ten days of June alone. By June 10, 1,292 of the planned 2,839 vehicles had been equipped, and the police aim to have around 2,000 equipped by the end of August. Most recoveries occurred in the metropolitan region.

The technology allows operators to generate alerts for stolen‑vehicle records, which are then relayed to field units for rapid interception, enhancing overall operational effectiveness.
