Brazilian politicians face court rulings over campaign conduct and defamation claims

Former Rio mayor and federal deputy Marcelo Crivella was ordered by a Rio de Janeiro court to pay R$ 20,000 to a student whose filmed remarks were used without permission in a campaign video and later edited for a televised football match. The ruling upheld earlier judgments despite Crivella's appeals.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a presidential candidate, asked the Supreme Court to instruct the Attorney General’s Office to investigate a criminal complaint he filed against Deputy André Janones for calling him a “miliciano” and other insults. Bolsonaro seeks at least R$ 200,000 in moral damages, arguing the statements exceed legitimate political criticism.
