Brazilian politicians forge alliances ahead of 2026 elections

Former Aparecida de Goiânia mayor Gustavo Mendanha (PRD) announced his support for Vanilson Bueno (Podemos) in the pre‑candidacy for the Goiás Legislative Assembly in the 2026 elections. Mendanha highlighted Bueno’s municipal experience and pledged mutual backing, with Bueno also endorsing Mendanha’s Senate bid, citing his administrative record and election performance.

Former Mato Grosso governor and Senate pre‑candidate Mauro Mendes (União Brasil) criticised state deputy Júlio Campos for allegedly threatening to block his candidacy. Mendes said Campos was “talking nonsense” and defended the party’s internal statutes, noting an upcoming party convention and coordination with the Progressive Party (PP) on scheduling.

Both episodes reflect internal party negotiations and candidate positioning as Brazil’s major parties prepare for upcoming state and federal races.
