Brazilian prisons roll out temporary release program and ban intimate visits

A Brazilian court authorized a temporary release program, known as “saidinha,” allowing 2,224 inmates serving semi‑open sentences in three Baixada Santista municipalities to leave prison between June 16 and June 23 under strict night‑time curfew and conduct rules. The largest number of releases was in Mongaguá (1,605 inmates), followed by São Vicente (609) and Praia Grande (10).

Separately, the Mato Grosso state justice department issued a new regulation prohibiting intimate visits for prisoners convicted of femicide, rape or pedophilia and for those under the disciplinary regime (RDD). The rule also bans intimate visits in bathrooms or unsuitable locations and sets limits for virtual video calls to ten‑minute, monitored sessions. Both measures are framed as efforts to tighten prison security and enforce judicial directives.
