Brazilian prosecutors secure rulings on sanitation and elderly care

Public prosecutors in Brazil have secured several judicial rulings addressing infrastructure and care deficiencies in different municipalities.

In Imperatriz, Maranhão, the court ordered the municipality to restructure the drainage system in the Itamar Guará II residential complex to prevent flooding and health risks. The city must also pay R$ 1 million in collective moral damages to the Municipal Environmental Fund and face daily fines for non-compliance.

In Palmas, Tocantins, a court ruling requires the developer of the Flor do Cerrado allotment to implement sewage infrastructure. The site, located in a protected environmental area, has relied on septic tanks for 20 years, causing waste overflow and environmental risks. The municipality was declared subsidiarily responsible for failing to oversee urban planning.

In Alvorada, Tocantins, the Public Ministry has filed a lawsuit seeking to suspend new admissions and mandate structural reforms at a private elderly care facility. Inspections revealed critical issues, including insufficient beds, lack of professional nursing supervision, improper medication storage, and inadequate accessibility features.
