The Public Ministry of Tocantins (MPTO), represented by prosecutor Vicente José Tavares Neto, reached a conduct‑adjustment agreement with four siblings to share responsibility for their 100‑year‑old mother. The pact requires the family to hire a caregiver, maintain regular visits, ensure medical appointments, medication, and transport, and imposes a R$2,000 fine for any breach.

Separately, prosecutor Ivonete Bernardes Oliveira Lopes highlighted the Ministry’s broader efforts to protect seniors, emphasizing the Statute of the Elderly, tougher penalties for abandonment and abuse (up to 14 years imprisonment), and the prevalence of financial exploitation by family members. She noted local initiatives such as free transport for those over 65, telephone‑based appointment scheduling, and home health services, underscoring the need for humane, family‑centered care.
