Brazilian regional health councils under investigation for financial and electoral misconduct

A federal police complaint filed this week alleges that the current administration of the Mato Grosso Regional Nursing Council (Coren‑MT) engaged in public‑fund misappropriation, irregular contract arrangements and possible manipulation of its 2023 internal elections. The denunciation, also sent to the Comptroller‑General and the Federal Public Prosecutor, cites a non‑competitive lease of a new headquarters costing millions above market rates and reports technical problems that allegedly blocked many nurses from voting electronically.

Separately, an audit by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) highlighted irregular spending by the former leadership of the Goiás Regional Medical Council (Cremego). The audit, prompted by a 2025 representation to the TCU and the MPF, claims that fees collected from physicians were used improperly during the tenure of former president Sheila Ferro, who denies any wrongdoing and says all expenditures were approved in plenary. Both investigations seek accountability for alleged misuse of council resources and may result in restitution to the public coffers.
