Brazilian religious leaders urge conscious voting
Religious leaders in Brazil are calling for conscious voter participation in upcoming elections, emphasizing the social and moral responsibilities of the electorate.
Father Fabrício Dias Timóteo stated that “votes have no price, votes have consequences,” urging citizens to move beyond individual interests and avoid emotionalism, fanaticism, or extremism. He suggested that political engagement can be a way for Christians to contribute to the common good, aligning his views with the concept of using politics as an instrument for social improvement.
Similarly, Bishop Flávio Giovenale of the Diocese of Cruzeiro do Sul criticized the practice of casting blank or null votes. Using an analogy of a customer ordering “anything” at a restaurant and then complaining about the meal, he argued that voters must clearly define what they want for the nation and their local communities. He urged voters to consider the future of younger generations and framed political participation as a commitment to society.
