Brazilian restaurants adopt benefits and anti‑gambling measures
Corporate benefits are being promoted as a key strategy for bars and restaurants in Brazil to attract and retain staff. Employers are expanding packages beyond salary to include health, dental, life‑insurance and wellness programs, which they say improve employee engagement, reduce turnover and boost productivity in a sector where service quality depends heavily on the workforce.
At the same time, gambling addiction is emerging as a workplace health issue. The Associação Brasileira de Bares e Restaurantes (Abrasel) reports frequent salary‑advance requests and absenteeism linked to compulsive betting. Restaurant owner Maurício Nishimori described confronting a worker who repeatedly disappeared after receiving his pay, directing him to public health services. The problem is reported across companies of all sizes, prompting large firms such as Ypê, Gerdau and Whirlpool to launch awareness workshops and support programs for affected employees.
