Brazilian retail sector faces legislative and economic pressures

The Brazilian retail sector is facing significant headwinds due to economic pressures and legislative debates. Frederico Trajano, CEO of Magazine Luiza, expressed concern during a retailers' meeting in São Paulo, noting that hundreds of stores are closing rapidly. Trajano criticized the “electoral haste” regarding discussions on changing work schedules from 6x1 to 5x2 and warned that political motivations near elections may prevent common sense from prevailing in legislative votes.

Additionally, the sector is concerned about the potential conversion of a provisional measure regarding import taxes into law, which could impact domestic product sales and employment.

In a separate context, Vulcabras reported its 24th consecutive quarter of growth despite a challenging environment marked by high interest rates and intense competition. The company, which owns Mizuno and Olympikus, reported a recurring net profit of R$ 143.7 million for the second quarter. CEO Pedro Bartelle noted that while the wellness culture and verticalized operations support growth, geopolitical conflicts and domestic macroeconomic factors continue to pose challenges for the industry.
