Brazilian retail shifts amid Carrefour restructuring and AI integration
The Brazilian retail landscape is undergoing significant structural and technological shifts. Carrefour Brasil has been restructuring its portfolio by divesting from its Nacional and Bompreço brands. This move involved 64 stores—47 in the South and 17 in the Northeast—which had a negative EBITDA contribution of R$ 42 million despite R$ 1.5 billion in gross sales. Regional networks such as Muffato, Festval, Nicolini, and Zaffari have begun occupying these former locations.
Simultaneously, the rise of artificial intelligence is altering consumer habits. While mature markets in the US and Europe are reducing physical store counts to increase productivity, Brazil continues to open new units. However, the integration of AI is becoming critical; 58% of Brazilians already use AI to search for prices and promotions. Retailers are now facing the need to optimize for Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) to ensure brands are recommended by AI agents like ChatGPT and Gemini, as these systems increasingly serve as the primary point of contact for consumers.
