Brazilian retailers boost sales with gamified competition

Between 24 June and 5 July 2026, 113 stores across Brazil took part in the Copa Varejo Ativo 2026, a gamified sales competition modelled on the World Cup. Over the 12‑day period the participating outlets recorded total revenue of R$ 3.09 million, and 20 of them outperformed their 2025 same‑period results, adding a combined R$ 280.3 thousand in sales.

The initiative follows a broader trend of using gamification to address declining worker engagement. Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2025 report notes that global employee engagement fell from 23 % to 21 % in 2024, a drop linked to an estimated US$ 438 billion loss in productivity. The same study estimates that about 70 % of the variation in team engagement is attributable to the direct manager, a role often filled by small‑business owners in retail.

The competition structure featured 11 “matches” and eight “penalties” with photo or video verification, bonus points for creativity, and digital medals. Specific challenges included “Convocação” (team photo in Brazil’s colours), “Treino Tático” (sales‑averaging drills), “Produto do Dia” (selling a minimum of one unit to ten prospects), “Ticket Turbo” (three multi‑item sales), and “Gol de Gratidão” (audio thank‑you messages to customers).
