Brazilian retirees face new 25% benefit boost and Pedágio 100 pension rule

Brazil’s social security system provides an additional 25 % payment to retirees who require permanent assistance from a third party. The supplement, available to those receiving a permanent disability pension, is granted after a medical evaluation by the Instituto Nacional do Seguro Social (INSS) and can be requested through the Meu INSS portal. Applicants must submit original medical documentation and may be subject to an in‑person examination; the process typically takes around 45 days.

Separately, the “Pedágio 100” rule, introduced by the recent pension reform, requires workers to combine their age with years of contribution to reach a total of 100 years. Those whose sum falls short must continue working for the remaining “pedágio” years before qualifying for retirement. The rule sets minimum ages between 56 and 62 and contribution periods of 30 years for women and 35 years for men, offering flexibility but also extending the working period for many.
