Brazil intensifies mental health awareness during Setembro Amarelo

Various Brazilian institutions and legislative bodies are conducting widespread activities for the ‘Setembro Amarelo’ (Yellow September) campaign, a national initiative focused on suicide prevention and mental health awareness.

Legislative actions include Piauí establishing the ipê-amarelo tree as a symbol of prevention, and Campo Grande implementing municipal laws to strengthen psychosocial care networks. In Amazonas, the Legislative Assembly has launched lecture cycles on the social factors of mental illness, while the Federal Senate’s Human Rights Commission held debates to increase public visibility of support networks like the CVV.

Local government and community efforts are also prominent. In João Pessoa, Emlur-JP held educational blitzes for public servants. In Campina Grande, council members are advocating for increased municipal health spending on psychological support in schools and basic health units. Additionally, religious-led projects are conducting school visits in Paraíba to provide messages of hope, and the state of Paraná reported a 19% increase in mental health service utilization during this period.
