Brazil intensifies Setembro Amarelo mental health and suicide prevention efforts

Brazil is observing the Setembro Amarelo campaign, a national movement focused on suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Various levels of government and civil society are implementing diverse initiatives to support emotional well-being and reduce social stigma.

In the legislative sphere, the Senate's Human Rights Commission held hearings to discuss public policies for preventing self-harm and suicide, noting that the World Health Organization reports over 720,000 suicides annually. In Piauí, the ipê-amarelo tree has been designated a symbol of prevention, encouraging planting in public spaces to represent hope.

Municipalities are also active: Cuiabá has expanded its mental health network with new psychiatric beds and specialized centers, while João Pessoa and Rio de Janeiro have conducted awareness actions for public servants. In Amazonas, the Aleam Sensory Inclusion Center has reached nearly 20,000 pediatric consultations. Educational institutions, such as SESI/AC and various school projects, are integrating mental health discussions into curricula to support children and adolescents.
