Brazilian scientific community warns of U.S. election interference risks
The Brazilian scientific community, led by the Academia Brasileira de Ciências (ABC) and the Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC), has issued a joint warning regarding potential foreign interference in Brazil's upcoming elections, specifically highlighting risks from the United States. The entities expressed concern that external pressures—whether political, economic, or through the manipulation of digital platforms and information environments—could undermine national sovereignty and the democratic will of the voters.
This alert follows a confidential report from the Agência Brasileira de Inteligência (Abin) produced in late August, which identified a risk of U.S. influence and a trend toward escalating pressure on Brazil. The scientific organizations have called for the mobilization of state institutions, academia, and civil society to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
Additionally, the Instituto Vladimir Herzog has escalated these concerns to the United Nations, requesting international attention to ensure the sovereignty of the Brazilian electoral process and the swift recognition of official results. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also addressed the issue at the UN General Assembly, emphasizing that Brazil will not permit external interference in its democratic processes.
