Brazilian scientific entities demand accountability in institutional crisis

The Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC) and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), supported by approximately 60 other scientific entities, have issued a joint statement addressing the political-institutional crisis involving the Supreme Federal Court (STF), the Federal Police (PF), and the Prosecutor General's Office (PGR).

The entities demand a rigorous, impartial, and independent investigation into any suspected irregularities involving state authorities. They emphasize that defending democratic institutions does not mean protecting their members from accountability, stating that “no authority is above the law or exempt from public scrutiny and the duty to be accountable to society.”

The statement calls for respect for due process, the right to a full defense, and the independence of investigative and judicial bodies. Furthermore, the scientific community warned that current institutional tensions could be exploited to fuel disinformation, deepen polarization, and undermine the democratic regime.
