Brazilian Senate approves Federal University of the Northern Border in Amapá

The Brazilian Senate has approved a bill to create the Federal University of the Northern Border in the state of Amapá. The new institution will be established by detaching the Binational Campus of Oiapoque from the Federal University of Amapá (Unifap).

Under the approved legislation (PL 4. 951/2026), the new university will incorporate all existing academic units, courses, enrolled students, and both occupied and vacant staff positions from the Oiapoque campus. As the Senate maintained the text previously passed by the Chamber of Deputies, the proposal now moves to the Presidency of the Republic for final sanction.

Senator Randolfe Rodrigues, the rapporteur, emphasized that the university will strengthen state presence and research capabilities in the strategic international border region between Oiapoque and French Guiana. He also noted that local academic expertise will be vital as oil and gas exploration activities approach the Equatorial Margin.
