Brazilian Senate approves new funds for MPU and DPU

The Brazilian Senate has approved two significant legislative projects aimed at strengthening judicial institutions through the creation of dedicated funds.

First, the Senate approved the creation of the Citizenship Strengthening and Improvement Fund for the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Union (FMPU). This fund, which operates outside the standard budget, is intended for infrastructure modernization, equipment procurement, and institutional training. The legislation includes transparency measures and explicitly prohibits the use of these funds for personnel payments.

Second, the Senate approved the creation of the Fund for Strengthening Access to Justice, Promotion of Fundamental Rights, and Structuring of the Federal Public Defender's Office (DPU). This fund aims to ensure free and integral legal assistance for vulnerable populations. It will be managed by a dedicated council and funded through various sources, including judicial costs and parliamentary amendments. The project also prohibits the use of funds for indemnity payments or personnel expenses, except where specifically provided for in the text. Both measures now await presidential sanction.
