Brazilian Senate approves revocation of Cristópolis National Forest decree
The Brazilian Senate has approved Bill 1.663/2022, which revokes the presidential decree that established the Cristópolis National Forest in western Bahia. The bill now moves forward for presidential sanction.
Originally created by decree on May 18, 2001, the reserve covered approximately 30,000 hectares. However, the Presidency of the Republic reported that the creation process contained irreparable legal flaws. Technical reports indicated that the physical demarcation of the forest was conducted using geographic coordinates entirely different from those specified in the original decree, placing the area in a different municipality.
Furthermore, studies concluded that the demarcated region did not possess the necessary ecological and forest attributes to justify a protected national forest. Senator Jaques Wagner noted that the error had persisted for 25 years, preventing landowners from producing normally on their land, an error that Ibama has also recognized.
