Brazilian Congress begins concentrated legislative effort before elections
The Brazilian Congress has resumed activities following its recess, initiating a period of concentrated legislative effort to address urgent matters before the October elections. This strategy, announced by Senate President Davi Alcolumbre, aims to balance the legislative agenda with the upcoming electoral campaign. Two main windows of intense voting are scheduled: the first from August 10 to 14, and the second from August 31 to September 3.
A major focus in the Senate's Economic Affairs Committee (CAE) is a proposal to increase the national salary floor for doctors and dentists from R$ 3,636 to R$ 13,662. To mitigate a projected R$ 8.4 billion annual fiscal impact, the committee approved an amendment for a staggered implementation over three years.
Other significant items on the agenda include the Apprentice Statute (PL 6.461/2019), which seeks to create a new legal framework for youth professional training, and the Victim Statute (PL 3.890/2020). Additionally, several provisional measures (MPs) regarding extraordinary credits are nearing expiration, including MP 1.351/2026, which provides a R$ 330 million subsidy for LPG importers to stabilize fuel prices amid Middle East tensions.
